The absence of the father in the family (physical or psychological) seems to be a very significant structural void in the industrialised world and even if new fathers are much more present in the daily life of the family today, their social role is still very unclear because of the many stereotyped ideas about men, especially in regards to education and care-giving functions with children. Fathers are also absent in developmental research, mostly based on observing the dyadic interaction between mother and child.
