SENATOR THE HON GEORGE BRANDIS QC
LEADER OF THE GOVERNMENT IN THE SENATE
IMPORTANT FAMILY LAW SYSTEM INITIATIVES
To mark the 17th Biennial National Family Law Conference, the Government is today announcing key initiatives to improve the family law system and outcomes for Australian families.
Empowering parents to resolve family law disputes outside the court system is critically important. Accordingly, the Government is today launching a new publication – Parenting Orders: what you need to know, which was developed by family law expert Professor Richard Chisholm AM, my department and many other stakeholders in the family law system. This will be an invaluable resource for separating parents, legal practitioners and other professionals within family law, in preparing clear and practical parenting orders and above all else, focusing on the best interests of the children.
The Government is also releasing the Family Law Council’s final report on Families with complex needs and the intersection of the family law and child protection systems. The report is a major contribution to identifying solutions for the challenges facing Australians involved in the family law and child protection systems. Families with complex needs, including those experiencing family violence, are the predominant clients of the family law system. The issues are challenging and important, and I thank the members of the Family Law Council, led by Professor Helen Rhoades, for their invaluable work.
The Attorney-General announced these key initiatives while delivering the State of the Nation address to over 1000 family law practitioners at the conference.
